#Monday Musings - The March of the Seasons has begun!

There is a delicate hint of fall in the air with the shorter days and a coolness to the mornings. From my window, I can see that the bird activity has changed these past few weeks. All the baby birds have gone which makes me sad as I miss watching their funny antics, especially the baby cardinals who were hilarious. They grow up way too fast. Sigh.

The berries are gone on the honeysuckle bush so there are no more gorgeous cedar waxwings. I miss seeing them. The hubs says he will plant more bushes for me next year. I'd love to have a whole yard full of cedar waxwings as I think they are one of the most beautiful birds I've ever seen. Thank goodness for my photos to freeze these special moments in time.

I was entranced to see this handsome young purple finch at the feeder yesterday. As you can see, he is starting to change colour from his brown speckles to his brilliant red plumage. What a beauty he is! Soon he will be migrating south so I am grateful to have captured some photos of him before he goes.

I’ve been back from my vacation in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia for a week now and am still trying to establish my routine with what little routine I have. At least fall is coming and that always helps give me more structure. For a person like me who has so many interests, I often feel scattered and jump around from project to project.

I like fall with that “Back to school” feeling of starting something new and the surge of activity after a lazy unstructured summer. I look forward to the cooler days and leaves changing colour. Too bad that winter has to follow.

For those in the northern hemisphere, I hope you can get outside to enjoy our last few weeks of summer. As my dad always says, "It's a longggggggg winter!"

The days grow short with a hint of fall
Summer doesn’t last very long at all,
This season will soon disappear
Gone again for another year,

Opening a book to a brand new page,
Fall will soon take centre stage,
The march of the seasons has begun
Enjoy what’s left of summer fun!

  1. That was such a sweet post, Cat! You are a hard-core bird lover! :-) The above post felt too short an account! I wish you would go on and on....I hardly get to see many birds out here. There are just the pigeons, crows, sparrows, mynas, a rare kingfisher, and may be some love birds and parrots. Whilst you have an avian treasure at your door step!Lucky you!

    1. Thanks, Shilpe. You are kind to say you wish I would go on and on. Probably most folks wish I would stop rambling so much about my birdies all the time. You sound like you get some interesting birds, too. We sure don't get mynas, love birds and parrots! What are the love birds? Doves? Thanks for commenting and sorry I've been so bad about our Sketchy Saturday. Let's try and do one this week. I like your photo idea, alternating with sketches.

  2. I love this period between the end of summer to the haze before the arrival of winter :) Time passes so soon no? I feel like we were talking about the colours of fall just a few days a ago and then it was over and here it is knocking at the door again!

    1. I am always curious to know how it compares in India since your climate is so different to Canada's. I guess you feel fall coming but it is not as extreme as here and you don't get the vicious winter we get. Thanks for commenting, Naba! Enjoy this last bit of summer!

  3. You are really blessed to be enjoying so many birds around you! We only get to see pigeons around us and must tell you that they are a big nuisance actually :P

    1. Shilpa Gupte was telling me how annoying the pigeons can be in the cities in India. Yes, I guess they are like that everywhere. I am glad there are none here in the country but I only have to go into Ottawa and there are lots. Every city seems to have them. I do feel lucky to have this diversity of birds and many stay all through the harsh winter which makes me admire them even more.

  4. Summer just flies by, doesn't it? :( We haven't really noticed the change yet, as we're further south, but it's coming soon. August always triggers that "summer is almost over feeling", although Sept. is usually a lovely month and even early October. It's what comes after...
Your poem says it all! ☺ That's a beautiful image, Cat! I always enjoy your bird photos.

  5. I don't ever tire of your bird stories or tributes. Being a fellow bird lover and squirrel feeding human, i envy your many species! We are more limited here in Florida. Our nearby storm drain is home to a few egrets and cranes, but they just fly over us here. We have our beloved cardinals, grackles, doves, blue jays, crows and a few finches passed through, but didn't stay. We have had only two Hummers on and off all year, so far. I'm grateful for what we do have with all the trees being slain to make room for houses.
And for the first August of my life, I'm not dreading winter. I will have sunshine throughout so I think I wil learn to embrace the cooler sixties.

  6. I grew up in India, and used to love the winters there. Mainly because the the winter temperature there compares to Fall weather here in the US. So naturally Fall is my favorite season here. Too bad winter has to follow. Hope you get to enjoy whatever is left of the sunshine days. :)

  7. I like watching birds too, though I know the names of very few species. It feels so wonderful waking up to the sound of birds here in Jaipur, instead of all those vehicle honks in Patna (where I used to stay earlier). I agree with both Shilpa's though... pigeons ARE quite annoying!

  10. The picture of the bird is beautiful, you have managed to capture a great moment. We have sparrows and pigeons here in North India, crows and pigeons in Mumbai. Saw a kingfisher near my house last winter, was thrilled :)

  11. As I said, you live in Narnia. So many beautiful birds and animals visit your place and you get to interact with nature at such close counter. It's amazing!!! I got cockatoos and spiders ...
