Nature Boy
Call me old fashioned, but when the days grow cooler and shorter, there is nothing I enjoy more than cranking up the Nat King Cole tunes.
I was only 5 years old back in 1965 when Nat King Cole
died at 45 of lung cancer so I don’t remember his music when I was a kid. As an
adult I’ve become a real fan of his music. His rich mellow voice is so
comforting like snuggling up by the fire in a big fuzzy blanket with hot chocolate and a romantic movie.
My favourite song of his is Nature Boy with this lush
orchestral arrangement. I listen to this song and all my troubles melt away. Ahhhh,
so soothing. I love the old tunes like this with a full orchestra playing.
I’ve always wondered if there really was a Nature Boy who
inspired the writer of this song. It intrigued me so I looked up the background. The song was written by eden ahbez (all small letters) who was
originally named George Alexander
Aberle.
eden ahbez was influential
in the beginning of the hippie movement and had many followers who were
referred to as Nature Boys. He lived a simple life growing his hair long,
wearing sandals and camping out while living on vegetables, fruits and nuts. He
claimed to live on three dollars a week.
When Nat King Cole made his
Nature Boy song a hit, there was a media frenzy when they found eden living
underneath the Hollywood Sign in Los Angeles. eden was a very strange enchanted
boy, indeed!
Writing is a good cure for the November blahs just like listening to Mr. Smooth himself, Nat King Cole!

ReplyDeleteI didn't know which song Nature Boy was until you wrote "a very strange enchanted boy." And unfortunately I only know those lyrics because of the movie Moulin Rouge, so thank you for this info. To the Spotify with me!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful song, Cat! And, true...the greatest thing you ever learn, is just to love and be loved in return! How very true!
ReplyDeleteI love Nat King Cole's voice - I have an album of him singing Christmas songs, which may be why his music always makes me think of the holidays! Fascinating history on that song, too - thank you for sharing!
